Time lapse

Photos have the power to tell great stories and let the mind wonder. Capturing change over time is something that always intrigues me, it helps fill in any gaps in the story the image is trying to convey. A couple of commonly used methods to display images over time are via video and stacking images. I wanted to explore different ways to merge time. I’ve used this opportunity to combine two of my passions, photography and algorithms, to develop different methods of stitching images together. I developed a custom algorithm to execute various time-lapse stitching methods. My first exploration stitches horizontal stripes and stacks them. The second method stitches the individual images with vertical stripes, allowing the eye to perceive time horizontally, from left to right, similar to a time line as commonly depicted in videos and charts. The final exploration, and more complex to develop, looks at the aspect ratio to develop a diagonal approach to combining the images. Depending on the aspect ratio it can yield significantly different results.
